Streetlife Radio Cinema reviews: War Horse

War Horse War Horse

Some 8,000,000 horses died during world war one, and this is the story of one, that touched the lives and hearts of every one he met, no matter their species.

Based on a play that's based on a book by Micheal Morpurgo. 'War Horse' shows us why Mr Spielberg has been dubbed the Godfather of film with his classic approach to blockbuster film making. With a great cast of familiar faces Emily Watson, Peter Mullan and Benedict Cumberbatch (to name a few) as well as some new ones directed by a great, I'm sure we all know, that we are in for a treat. And it wouldn't be Spielberg without master film composer, John Williams doing the amazing orchestral music.

This movie is somewhat of a love story between a boy and his horse. We follow Albert (Jeremy Irvine) on his journey to hopefully be reunited with his pet and best friend Joey after he was sold to the British Cavalry. We for the most part of the film  watch Joey, across Europe during World War One (1914-1918) and on the many adventures that he has to become known simply as War Horse.

The vast amount of people who meet Joey all grow very fond of him (as you will too I'm sure) from a fourteen year old German boy who enlisted in the army with his brother, to a sickly French girl (Celine Buckens) who names him Francois after a boy who broke her heart in the summer.  A touching movie with some fantastic battle scenes (gets a bit 'Saving Private Ryan') along with some great family scenes means this film has something for everyone. It is a very long film at 146 minutes but fly's by due to the ever changing locations and characters that are introduced to us. Great for adults and film buffs but will be distressing for younger children, so bare the 12A certificate in mind on family movie night.

I laughed I cried, and now I want a horse.

    Couldn't agree more.

Excellent film which showed a partial insight into how brutal and violent the first world war was from all sides, the British, the Germans and the Horse!

Forget getting a dog, I want a horse!!!

    Highly recommended!
